I had a shock today...
I was getting our bills ready and noticed that the payment that automatically deducts from our checking for auto insurance almost doubled since last month. Whhaaa???
Called our local insurance gal that can get quotes from everyone and she verified that, yep... It's because of my husbands speeding ticket in November of '08. The thing was... Robb didn't have his insurance card with him to prove insurance so the amount of the ticket was exorbitant. And the court day when he could show up and prove he had insurance was the same day that he was on Jury duty for a whole week.
Option 1. skip Jury Duty to show up in court to prove you have insurance
Result: spend 30 days in jail and pay a hefty fine for shirking jury duty.
Option 2. pay the fine online and make it to Jury Duty (50 miles apart - so there was no compromise)
Result: double your insurance rates for up to 3 years.
Just talking with our insurance gal again and apparently the insurance company doesn't care why you didn't fight it in court. Just the fact that we didn't makes them want to double our rates. I thought for sure it was because of Ryan's accident, but he wasn't at fault and that's not it.
So... Robb and I are looking to probably the tripped out name tag lady or the lizard for some relief...
I felt the same "tears squirting from my eyes" & "someone punching your stomach" sensations when we found that no one will give health insurance to a pregnant woman... Live and learn... Live and learn...

Ugh! That sucks!!! That was a total you are damned if you do and damned if you don't kind of situation.
Can you shop around for new insurance? Doubling your rates seems a bit extreme.
We're definitely shopping around. Our local insurance lady is doing most of it for us, but she doesn't seem real positive...
Robb checked out some rates on Geico and Progressive and I think we can get it just under what we were originally paying. We'll have to forfeit the car rental insurance, but oh well... We've only used it once and it was a pain anyway.
Oy. I hear you on the 'no insurance for pregnant ladies'. My husband went self-employed when I was carrying our 4th. Tried to get private insurance (through the same carrier, mind you) instead of COBRA. No go. Seems if there was anything wrong with the baby, they'd have to cover it too & didn't want the risk. Again, same carrier as we had. Didn't make sense then, doesn't make sense now.
