When you guys were kids, did you ever hear that if you brought in a Tootsie Roll Pop wrapper with an indian shooting a star to any grocery store that you would get a free sucker?
Well I certainly did... and the Solomon's grocery just up the street from my elementary school honored that rumor! It definitely made me want to drag my mom into that store after school!
My husband said it's just a myth. But I've seen it and made use of it! He thinks that maybe the kindly old man that owned the store allowed it to go on just to get more business. Maybe he's right.
Well - Solomon's is now a Dollar General and they DON'T honor it. In fact, I don't think they even sell these suckers there anymore... and some people at these stores just look at you like you may be slightly mad...
And before I forget... a BIG THANK YOU goes out to Pam at Mom's Mutterings. In the mail yesterday I got the book that I won from her in her January book giveaways. She does reviews of these books from the publishers and then gives away 5 copies to 5 lucky people, several books each month. Check her out! She's fabulous! Pam has two teenaged kids and I can relate to her family stories so much! Oh and two cats! At least one of which writes her posts on occasion... I won another book from her a few months ago and wasn't able to thank her for it then, because I gave it away as a Christmas present! So Pam, Thank you also for that book too! I LOVE your giveaways!

I miss my mom and pop store! I have never found a shooting star!!!
Wow! That was a blast from the past! I used to save those but don't think I ever tried to cash them in.
I seem to vaguely remember something about the star on the wrapper, but I don't think I ever found one.
My mom and dad used to own an old general store (wood floors, pot belly stove, bulk candy, the whole works) and I'm sure he would've honored something like that whether it was true or not. :)
I had not heard of this. interesting. I guess the store owner also used it as a way to bring in business since kids would keep looking to find one..
That book looks good!!
And now I want a tootsie pop.
I've never heard of this.
Stopping by from Fri Follows - I'm a new follower whether late or early, I am here!. Love to have you stop by:

It's true - I did grow up living under a rock! I never heard about this, else I would have darn well been lookin' for that tootsie pop! Great story, and great win! -Tammy
OMG, I forgot about the free Tootsie pops. The local store in my hometown honored those. Oh the good old days.
You are right! The grocery store on Hiway 71 in Lake View honored that special wrapper, too. Which also brings to mind the bazooka bubble gum wrappers. Remember how you could save them up and send away for cool stuff?
Winning free books is fabulous!
