An Inspiration!

Isn't it funny when you are forced to try something new and then discover you REALLY like it?
Monday night, our 4H club was having their annual s'mores party during the horse fun show. I bring the firepit and other members bring s'more stuff. However I also had a sewing meeting to go to at the exact same time and was going to leave both the girls there with their friends while I went. Maddy decided it was too hot to stay. She'd already camped out there the night before with a friend and was still trying to recover from having to run across the fairgrounds in her jams just to wash her face as well as getting used to her eyelids sweating...

So after begging me to take her home first and me refusing, she relented and came along with me. On the way I told her what the meetings were like. The members try not to use the big 4 pattern makers like McCalls, Butterick, Simplicity and I think Vogue, but they use that sometimes anyway. They try to use independent pattern labels that I'd never heard of before, so the styles are different and unique. She wasn't understanding me...

When we arrived, I grabbed my State Fair entries to show and we went in. There were about 15 women total for the meeting and we went around the room one at a time. Each would either show a garment they made or ask for advice on what to do with a bit of the garment they didn't think fit right. Or they'd bring some fabric that you just DON'T get at JoAnns Fabrics. Some of them travel a lot to big cities and bring back a few yards of luscious ruffly stuff or silk from Japan, etc. Or they share fabric that they want to get rid of on a free table on which Maddy found some silk kimonos that she will probably have me repurpose for a shirt or something.

This type of meeting is a lot more cozy than the bigger ASG meetings that Maddy had attended before with me for the sewing workshops. As the fabrics and garments got passed around for us to drool over, Maddy did her fair share of drooling.

She was inspired. Not to sew her own clothes... Oh no! But with ideas on what I could sew for her and possibly her friends. She and a friend want to start a trend where they wear dresses to school on Thursdays. I forget the exact name Maddy called it, but I think it was "Evening dress Thursdays".

Not that I'm going to let her wear an evening gown to school! But I think that's kind of neat that girls want to be girls again! I'll make her whatever dress she dreams up.

I remember in HS we would only wear dresses if we could get another friend to wear one, too. Crazy girls were we.

I'm far (very far) from being a girly-girl, but lately I've been wearing dresses a lot, also. I like the long, loose sleeveless sundresses the best, in floral or some kind of "hippy-ish" print. Cool and comfy all the way.

Kat's really into dresses and scooter skirts this summer, too.

I work with a woman who dresses up every Thursday because it's what she did growing up. I like evening dress Thursday!
