State Fair Entry comments on my garments

Sorry for the wrinkly pictures...

Sigh...

I got the comments back for my State Fair entries and realize I need to up the ante a little more next year.

Ok - a LOT more.

I may have gotten 2nd place on this children's jacket... But it's only because there were only 4 or 5 items in the children's clothing category! And perhaps I found a soft judge.I did get an honorable mention on this blanket. But there was no comment sheet on it! I have no idea what they liked or didn't like about it.Then on my skirt and shirt & dress. The judges didn't like the finishing on any of the 3. I got a 3 out of 5.sigh...

Well - I guess I need to take more time when working on a garment and take more pains in the finishing. I also need to choose more garments with more detailing work. They really liked the tucks on the blue jacket.

My August Resolutions as of right now... Can't wait until January 1st.

1) I will do finishing on all edges BEFORE sewing a garment together and not just because I'm in a rush to get this thing done.

2) I will choose a garment for the detailing in the pattern or be more creative with my own details.

3) I will quit letting an anonymous person dictate how I should feel today... Be it a judge or a dropped follower...

Anyone want to add to the list? I WILL add them!

I like the tucks on the jacket as well!

Good goals to me!

I'm still waiting to get my knitting back and see what the judges have to say. I have purchased a kit that I hope to use as a state fair entry next year.

My new goal is one I made without knowing the judges' comments yet....next year I am going to BLOCK all my pieces. (The ONE item I blocked this year got a 2nd place, all other ribbons were 3rds, and some pieces had no ribbons.)

I love your butterfly blanket!

Those clothing articles are beautiful. But, since I don't sew, I don't know what the judges were looking for. But, I love all of them, especially that butterfly blanket!

Like my Mom always says, "if at first you don't succeed, try try again." But, I much prefer mine, "If at first you don't fricassee, fry fry a hen!" LOL

Your goals sound good...I can't think of anything to add to them. I especially like the last one!!!

Yep....concentrating on the details more is a great goal for next year.
I am bad about that too.....I like to get it finished fast and with the theater/costume background, well, we aren't big on precise finishing details. As long as it looks good from the stage, it's fine....nobody is taking a magnifying glass to our work like a fair judge. ;-)
Maybe make one 'showpiece' garment too next year....you know, something flashy in a lux fabric that you wouldn't actually wear....you can always sell it instead.lol

Just finding the time to make garments and having the gumption to enter them you deserve a big pat on the back!! 8-)

When I sewed all my own clothes... oh, so many years ago...I never finished the edges. I guess it is a good think no one was judging them.

You should feel great today!

I love your projects! Bah... what do those ol' judges know?! One resolution I have is to actually do some sewing this winter. Wow, could it really happen? :) -Tammy

I like them all. I'm sure it would be nice to have more detailed feedback so you know what areas to focus on now. Either way, you did great and should be proud of yourself. I am!

I loved all the things you made. But that blue child's jacket is awesome. I would wear it if I could fit into it.

those judges seemed a little brutal - but I guess they are just doing their job; when I used to enter art shows, it got so depressing it turned me off of art for many years. You are wise to try and ignore the criticism and be happy with your creations :)

Do you have a serger? I don't know how to finish anything nicely but I don't have a serger. Oh well, if it looks good to me, I guess that is OK:)

Eh, I wouldn't worry about it. The point of sewing is to have clothes to wear, right? If they look good on the outside that's good enough for me! And on the details issue--only choose projects you actually like. It seems that technical proficiency is correlated only with "art to wear" type stuff. But that style is not to my taste, to put it mildly. I'd rather be unproficient and stylish!

Hi Val - I came over from Catherines Blog - I'm an old friend of the McMullens from the Sumner days. (Hi to Robb and Mrs. M). I hope you don't mind me peaking in. I give you blue ribbons in the sewing category - I so want to learn to sew.
