Get your OWN tots!

Tator tot casserole that is... Some of you have never heard of it! That astounds me... There are so many variations out there. My mom puts green beans in hers and my husband says that is sacrilege. Here is our recipe for it. You don't have to like it. But it does taste good with ketchup. I mean... doesn't everything?

Tator Tot Casserole - Robb style.

1) Get large microwavable bowl with fitted lid. Put in 3/4 cup rice, 1.5 cups water and 1 onion soup mix packet. Microwave on high for 20 minutes.

2) In a 9X13 pan, press 2 lbs of hamburger, spread fairly evenly.

3) over the hamburger, spread 1/2 a can of Cream of Stuff (our families official name for it, but that can be cream of celery, cream of mushroom, whatever).

4) over the cream of stuff, put down an even layer of the rice.

5) over the rice, spread the rest of the cream of stuff.

6) next put on a layer of cheese. Velveeta works best, but we've used sliced American before and that's good too.

7) overall, arrange the tator tots in an orderly fashion. Cover the entire casserole with the tots in snug rows.
They taste best when in straight rows...
Robb likes to put a few extra just laying on the top for sampling doneness later on. Smart move!

Bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes.

Serve with ketchup. or not.

Sounds yummy!

The one Shane brought to our marriage is my favorite...tots on bottom, cooked ground beef seasoned with lemon pepper on top of the tots, then cream of mushroom, then cheddar on top.

I can't imagine there's any tot recipe I wouldn't like. :)

That's funny...I always laugh when people haven't heard of it, but I didn't learn of it til I was about 11 or so.
Our recipes differ, isn't that funny? So many different styles.

I just took one to a church potluck. Never tried it with rice, though. We usually have peas in between the hamburger and the Cream of Stuff, but sometimes mixed veggies.

do you think this would work without the meat?? I'm tempted to try it...

Oh - I just don't know. It seems like an odd combination of foods in a pan (I think it is the rice that is throwing me for a loop). And, do you cook the beef before putting it in the pan? Or, does it cook while the whole thing is baking? Wouldn't that make it greasy?

I'm sorry to ask so many questions - I'm just really curious - as this is something I have never had nor made before.

Ours doesn't have rice either...we usually use a bag of frozen peas & carrots, or a bag of frozen corn. (On occassion I have been known to use a bag of frozen mixed veggies, but if it's the kind with lima beans in it, I'm dead meat unless I remove the lima beans before cooking.) And we have a layer of cheese inside the casserole and cheese sprinkled on top of the tots too. (Usually colby-jack or cheddar-jack).

Mmmmm....tater tots!

My family isn't much for casseroles. Sad I know but for some reason, they just don't like them. FYI tater tot casserole is Jim Bob Duggar's favorite meal ;o)

We call it cream of something in our house!LOL
Do you cook the hamburger or put it in the pan uncooked? It might be a stupid question but for a bad cook like me it is an important question!

I'm certain that my kids wouldn't eat this. They're so picky and I love casseroles.

This is something my hubby and kids would love. They love anything with tator tots. Which site was it? I haven't added anything to either site and I've been checking the sites with Macafee so I know there can't be anything wrong. Will try to test again. Thanks for letting me know.

This is a popular recipe in my area. What I like to call a "church lady recipe". Which is some excellent food! Church cookbooks always have recipes which use the "cream soup".
