Reese finds a diary in the attic and starts to read it. As he reads about this young high school girl's life that she pours out on every page, he finds that he can relate to her. Perhaps she's the ONLY one he has ever related with in his entire troubled youth. He reads through her experiences every day and finds that he's falling for her... A girl from the past. That's about the time his mom comes in the room with a basket full of laundry and says, "Hey! Where'd you find my old diary?!"
Last night Maddy was saying she needed a book for school to read in her spare time. I browsed through my bookshelf and jokingly said, "Hey! I'll bet you never read this before!" and tossed her my old diary that I started when I was 10. The lock was long since broken and featured a cutesy little girl in a pinafore dress on the flower laden cover. It had been a Christmas gift from my much loved god-parents and heavily featured in the first scribbled entry.Maddy was anxious to see what I was like at that age and started reading some of it, skipping around as my handwriting was atrocious at times. And pencil writing smears and fades with age. It's been 33 years!
There were fights with my sisters where I wanted to watch The Hardy Boys because Joe (Shawn Cassidy) was SOOO cute and my sister Ruth Ann wanted to watch Gus. Gus is a mule just like her! Or at least that's what I wrote. All angry words in caps. Isn't that JUST like me now?!
She found an entry from high school and the prayer for a boyfriend. She thought it was a hoot! Also that I remembered most of it from memory several years later.
Heavenly Father full of grace
Bless my boyfriend, foxy face.
Bless the hair that never curls,
Keep him safe from other girls.
Bless the man I long to marry.
Bless the kids I long to carry.
If he reads this poem of mine,
bless the thoughts that cross his mind.
Later I asked her, How old am I in the one you're reading? She said, "college age". *GASP* GIVE ME THAT! Apparently my diary had been misplaced frequently throughout the years and whenever I found it, I'd write about a current crush or big event in my life. I hadn't done anything REALLY bad in college, but wasn't sure if some things would be misunderstood by my 15 year old. After glancing through the rest of the entries decided it wasn't too bad.Bless my boyfriend, foxy face.
Bless the hair that never curls,
Keep him safe from other girls.
Bless the man I long to marry.
Bless the kids I long to carry.
If he reads this poem of mine,
bless the thoughts that cross his mind.
For example... I celebrated my 19th birthday by getting a wine cooler. IT WAS LEGAL THEN PEOPLE! Remember? 19!? It was when I was 20 that the legal drinking age was changed to 21 so I was grandfathered into it. Maddy thought I was going to write about being drunk. Um nope. That's just not me.
I wrote about a successful 32 year old that I dated when I was 18. My parents approved. But after a couple dates, I sure didn't. I wrote about several jerky boyfriends and the eventual end of each ones dating scene. After a single date, I was usually hopelessly in LOVE! Some just stopped calling or writing and I wondered about it in several entries. Then gave up on them.
Maddy was mostly looking for entries about her dad, my husband. Nope. I must have lost the diary again when I was dating the
Should I start writing in it again? Or just tuck it away for my kids to laugh at again at some point in the future?

I threw away my childhood/high school diaries. Now I kind of wish I hadn't.
My diaries are somewhere....just can't figure out where! You definitely should start writing in it again. I should write in a diary again! Then, we'll wait about 20-30 years and trade diaries!! :)

I stopped keeping a diary after I found out my parents had read it. The same thing happened with short stories I used to write. It really turned me off writing for years.
(I'll probably blog about this sometime.)
Okay, I'm just in shock that you still have your diary and it's in a spot where you could get to it easily!!! :)
How cool that you can go back and read that. I never wrote in diaries....didn't want to leave any evidence. LOL!
I would never want my kids to read anything I wrote in my younger days. My kids are goody goodies compared to me! SCARY!
Write in it and then hide it again. It's like a your own personal time capsule!
I love the poem you wrote about your boyfriend. THAT'S HILARIOUS!!! How's that for caps?
I think you should write in your diary memories from when you were dating your husband and from early marriage. I'll bet the kids would love that.
And be sure you don't lose it this time so your grandkids can read it.

I shared with the sons some of the bad things that I did in college. Not so much a do what I say not what I do thing but more as, Yes I've been there done that. If you decide to do it then this is what you should remember.
One of the things was smoking pot. Yep the mamma was a big pot head in college (I have a good excuse in that it was an all girl catholic college and we had to amuze ourselves somehow). Any way they asked their questions, who knows if they learned anything with what I had to say, but now they LOVE to tease me about my wild college days. Yea, I learned my lesson, I'll just keep those memories to myself.....
Oh I have all of mine and still keep a journal to this day. So much of my life is poured out on all the pages. The more recent ones are more about future hopes and dreams talking to future readers - perhaps my grands yet to be even thought about yet.
Love how your kids reacted.
