Here's what transpired...
My brilliant daughter Meri, who wants to be a Forensic Scientist someday did some experimenting. Then when she had success she invited a couple neighbor kids over to show them. She pulled out a big bowl and put a smallish jar in the center of it. Luckily we had 1.5 gallons of white vinegar on hand from a rocket science experiment of Ryan's from 8th grade. Yep - 6 or 7 years ago. We keep refilling our vinegar bottle when we remember we still have this honking huge one... Sometimes we don't remember. We don't go through THAT much vinegar around here!
Any ways - Meri measured out a teaspoon or so of baking soda into the jar, along with a few drops of food coloring and a big squirt of my dish soap, then poured in some vinegar. Not too much.
It starts to foam over the top of the jar in the prettiest colors into the bowl! So cool! Had the 5 year old from next door gushing at the mouth...
Whoa! Wow! So cool!
Then when it dies down, she adds a new color, a little more of each thing and does it again.
Our dishwasher pump went out the day after the Sears guy was here last week, so I've been having to wash dishes by hand all week. My fingernails have never looked so good, but I can't WAIT until he comes back tomorrow!
Side note: If you buy a dishwasher, those warrantees are AWESOME business! Especially if you buy the kind that I bought. My husband thinks its a piece of junk. It's top of the line I tell you! And oh so pretty! Ssh!So anyway - back to the dish soap thief. She left me HALF a drop of soap for the dishes.
Sigh. The things I put up with to make my kids happy...
Here's a look at her experiment.
It was SOOO worth it!

How cool is that? My dishwasher broke awhile ago - dishes is now DS#3's chore!!!
Why did she use the dish soap? I am pretty sure baking soda and vinegar foam with no help. Of course, I could be wrong...it has been a long time since Science class.
how neat:) speaking of experiments i should have my daughter take a look at this when she gets home today...she's doing some science herself:)
Oooh! That is pretty. I'm worried because I bought my dishwasher at Sears and didn't get the extended warranty. I hope you didn't jinx me!
That is so cool!
THAT IS THE COOLEST THING EVER! I know what I'm doing tonight.
LOL about the half a drop of soap!
That is awesome! How did she even know about that trick??
That was a cool, and you would need the soap to get that kind of suds, with just baking soda and vingar you would get a different type of suds. Or at least that's what the science major here told me...
As for the dishwasher. I hate mine. I bought the top of the line, best you could get at the time, and it has broken so many times I can't count. Last time the repairman came he gave me a gift certificate for fifty dollars off a new one. I laughed and told him I needed at least ten more to cover the cost the one I have.
What a totally awesome experiment!
I don't know what I would do if my dishwasher broke. I wash some dishes by hand still (my knives, my pots & pans), but most of it goes in the dishwasher. I can't imagine, now that we have Madaline, having to wash all those dishes by hand. Yikes!!
awesome!! VC would love that experiment
What great fun! I've bookmarked this so I can remember to do it with our little ones.
