Piano lessons

Piano playing runs in my family. My kids have all had piano lessons for some period of time. And each kid is totally different in what they got from it.My older daughter started when she was 5 and still takes lessons. (against her will) But it has paid off and she enjoys playing now. She'll sit at the piano and just play whatever she wants for extended periods of time. She usually gets out of dishes if she's practicing... And has gone to the State Fair with her performances for the past two year.

My son asked for lessons when he was around 9 or 10. So we got him in too. He went through one or two of the lesson books and then for a Christmas gift we let him quit. He still tinks on it when he's bored or feeling like being creative and doesn't have a guitar handy. We let him have guitar lessons for a while too.

My youngest daughter filled his empty time slot with his piano teacher when she was 5. It was frustrating for me, because she needed so much assistance in preparing for her lesson. Just HIT THE KEY! HIT IT!!! I didn't really have blood pressure problems until then... Still don't really, but seriously didn't have the patience. So we had her quit for a while and let her take voice lessons instead. After a couple years of that, she got back into piano and has been doing well (when she practices) since.

I took piano from age 5 on up through high school. Did some accompaniment to some singing students at college. Started violin in 5th grade and took that through college too with the orchestra. Still have my old violin but haven't touched either instrument in a long time. The last time I played piano was Bobcat Boogie that I learned in 2nd grade. That will NEVER leave me!

Anyway, at piano lessons, my first teacher was named Mrs. Dekay. Ironic, yes? She was about 90. She wrongly accused my sisters and myself of attempting to flush candy wrappers down her toilet. But I think it was those nasty kids that took lessons ahead of us.

My mom wanted me to learn hymns after several years of playing, so I picked out my favorite. Mrs. Dekay agreed and helped me through the hymn during my lesson. When Mom picked me up from lessons she asked which one I'd picked. "Asleep in Jesus".

My mom was not happy with my choice.

Here my teacher is real close to death... I mean, 90 plus right?! Mom didn't want to depress her. But it was my favorite!!! We had just sung it at my dear sweet grandma's funeral and it had stuck with me.Just Grandma and me! Cracking walnuts. I was 2.

By the way... I learned it really well.

What an adorable picture!
I only ever played hotcross buns or whatever it's called. And only once. And I didn't know the keys I just hit what they told me.

I so wanted to take piano lessons as a kid. My mom wouldn't let me. Said the only reason I wanted to do it was to be like my cousin. So when two of my sons wanted to take lessons, I jumped at it. It lasted for a few years before the quit. Neither one plays on the piano now. It just sits in the living room, taking up space....

Oh I love that all the kids learned to play. Bryan took lessons for 2 years then his teacher died unexpectedly and he didn't want to take them anymore. But he still tinkers too.

I took piano lessons for a few years when I was a kid. I honestly don't know if I can remember which keys to put my fingers on now. Obviously, I didn't keep up with it.
