So yesterday, Maddy and her boyfriend went shopping for a tie for him that would match her dress.
They found nothing. But Maddy got an idea... "How about Mom (that's me!) covers an old yucky tie with fabric to match my dress?" She thought that we had tons of them at home. AND she thought it would be a snap for me to whip it up for them. Kind of like when Robb says, "You're such a fast cleaner. I'd better stay out of your way. It'll only take you 10 minutes to straighten up the house."
Yeah...
Well - outside of my husbands Christmas Grinch ties, some of them are pretty ghastly. And one was Ryan's that he wore to the Sweetheart ball in 2006, so we chose that one. Here it is... I think it's nice! But Maddy remembers that she hated it when it was purchased and still does.
So...
Here's the plan...
We found suitable black fabric in my stash and the rest of the handmade ribbon we made for Maddy's bodice. Then covered it with the black sheer that we used for the outer layer of Mad's skirt. Before work this morning, I sketched out a pattern on the back of some leftover Christmas wrapping paper. Boy! That stuff is handy! Added 5/8" for the seam and part of the foldover of the edges.
Over lunch today I get to attempt to put this thing together! We'll see how that works... I'm putting the polka dot stripe under the sheer at an angle on the tie. Maybe a little lower than shown. I pulled off the Van Huesen tag on the back to tuck the narrow part of the tie into later. Let everyone think he got it from Van Huesen!
Wish me luck and any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

Brave woman, good luck with that! But then it was a tie that no one liked so what do you have to loose except your time? I'll be thinking of you around noonish ;o)
Wow! I'm impressed that you're attempting this. It's going to look great though.
Wow--you sure are a good mom. Can't wait to see how it turns out. Take care.
Whoa. I'd tell her to keep looking because I couldn't do it.
I'm not good with sewing....but I think it's an awesome idea and I have no doubt you are going to make it look amazing! Can't wait to see the results!!
Have a great day!
Blessings,
Jill
I wouldn't cover the tie with more layers of fabric, it will get too bulky to tie around his neck. Why don't you take the tie apart. Use the old tie fabric as a pattern and use the interfacing inside (and the van Husen label) to make a new tie with your dress matchy fabric. It's not any more work than "covering" a tie.
Love the title post!
aha, they all better have strong faith in mama!!
Can't wait to see the final finish design, McVal!
xo
I am sure it will turn out great.
I think that it's going to look fabulous and look great with her dress!
Becky - thanks for the advice! I was wondering that myself... Don't want it to be a scarf on the boy, just a tie!
Thanks everyone! I'll be posting pics on Monday of the kids in their outfits.
Good luck and make sure you show off the finished product here on the blog!
Can't wait to see the finished product! You remind me of my mom...she does projects like this - she's fearles...and wildly, creatively talented in the sewing department. She has a sewing machine and a serger and an embroidery machine...she's amazing! You two would have a ton of fun together!
