So Sunday afternoon, our plans to visit a friend fell through due to illness on their end and suddenly we had an afternoon free! Maddy suggested looking through my sewing magazines for ideas. So we settled on the upstairs hall floor and laid them all out, paging through every single one of them.It was very fun. Even more so when she liked one or two of my suggestions! But ultimately she didn't go for those.
Here's the plan... The bodice will be strapless. Basically the same under-structure that I've done for the last two dresses. But covering the bodice will be bias strips of sheer or at the very least extremely lightweight fabric folded over, stitched with a wing needle to give it some extra detail, then handstitched onto the bodice in rows. But it will NOT be this low cut...It will be beautiful. Difficult and time consuming, but beautiful. Then the skirt will be full length and very poofy. With added crinoline underneath possibly. I haven't thought that far ahead yet but below is the example that she chose. She wants it in red.
I found the sample bodice I made for her Sweetheart dress and with the taking in on the back by 1.5 inches on each side of the zipper, it will fit perfectly.I tried out my idea for how to handle the bias strips and I think this is going to work pretty slick. I don't have a wing needle for my machine yet, but will pick one up.
This weekend I plan on sewing my nieces confirmation dress so I won't be able to start then, but maybe we'll pick up the fabric for the prom project on Sunday. We'll have to see.
Then we'll be in full prom production!
Wish me luck! and any suggestions!

You're a great mom! I had the most hideous prom dresses way back when, but that's because my parents didn't sew. AND my mom was a geek. (so I thought then) The idea for that dress is awesome. I can't even imagine what her wedding dress will look like someday.
What lucky kids you have!! I so wish I had kept up with my sewing. Have a wonderful week. Take care.
She is so lucky to have such a talented Mommy!! It's going to be beautiful!
Blessings

I can't wait to see what you come up with!
Take care of yourself!
What a great/talented mom you are! You just fill all kinds of dress order AND they look fabulous. Can't wait to see this dress after it is finished.
Can't wait to see the end result!
I remember making prom dresses. But only for myself.
This is going to be gorgeous!
