When they showed up, I ditched them all and went to find a bakery. One of my friends had asked me to find some Dutch letters for her, so I had a mission!
And oh my! Pella, Iowa was packed with people!
Oh and tulips!
But getting back to the people! There were folks from all over the world in little old Pella who had no Dutch blood in them at all... Well... I don't either!I'm there for the food and to be a cheerleader for my hubs... *who doesn't have one drop of Dutch blood in him either...*
FINALLY pushed and shoved my way to the first bakery and the line to get in the joint went about 40 feet down the street! So I went to the second and found the same predicament...
Ok fine. I walked the perimeter around the town square and when the parade was about to start, I was able to get right into the bakeries and got lots of goodies.
Dutch letters, creme filled horns, bavarian creme filled pillow puffs... Oh my YUMMMM!
Oh and a Diet Dr. Pepper! The lady there must have thought I knew how to balance my caloric intake! *and that I was partially insane....*
I found a curb that had an opening and got to talking with an elderly gentleman who's teenage granddaughter parked him there and ran off with friends. He knew everything about everything! and wasn't afraid to tell me about it all...
On the other side of me was a couple teenagers and his mom and they were talking about computer science degrees and what kind of salary to expect after college. I HAD to put my two cents in because I wasn't making that kind of money and I'd been in the business for 23 years...
Found out that he's going to attend my old Alma Mater next year! COOL! He and his mom had tons of questions and I gave them lots of advice in exchange for one of their lawn chairs. The curb was hurting my bottom. *well - actually they offered it...*
Robb's bagpipe band was half way thru the parade but I got a video! They sounded great even tho Robb says it was their worst song. His mouth got dry half way through the parade and by the time he got to where I was, he was faking playing.
Have you ever been around a ton of people and heard your name being yelled? I stopped and looked all around. Couldn't seen any of the familiar kilts and started walking again. Heard my name again, so I stopped and scoped things out again. STILL nothing.
Tried calling Robb on his cell, but it was so sunny I couldn't tell if it was going through or not. Finally waited a sec and got a call from him! He said, "I'm directly across the street from you sitting on the church steps!"
AHA! There he was! There was a Dutch wagon in the way and I didn't see his kilt. You see, we're getting old and get worn out easily... So after meeting up with him, I went to get the car and we started our trek home where my sister in law and her family were waiting for us.
I guess the only connection between a Scottish Pipe band and the Dutch community is a few hundred miles from Scotland to Holland and then the fact that they invited the band to play...
