Prom dress time! I got Maddy to set aside a little time and start looking at prom dresses. After the winter formal dress, Maddy liked the idea of just going with a pattern. It was less stressful for her. Apparently the last couple prom dresses stressed her out because she designed them and with a pattern, it takes that note of worry out of her head. Who needs more stress when you've got a bazillion things to finish your Senior year?
So ok. She looked at patterns from Vogue, McCalls, Butterick, Simplicity. All online. Those of course aren't all of the patterns that they put up there.. We'll have to go to JoAnns and check out their catalogs too. But when? Maybe after church Sunday. But anyway... She wasn't too impressed with them. So THAT was adding stress too.
I got the idea to go vintage. There are old patterns out there floating around with some unique designs that no one in this modern age would think of! Probably because it's really hard to make... Not sure.
I tagged several and showed them to her. Then showed how I could probably find the actual pattern for it on Ebay, and I did find a few. However the one that intrigued us the most is being elusive and rare.
What do you think of this style? We loved the double rows of buttons down the back!
I would personally put in an invisible zipper on one or both sides and then just sew on the buttons for effect. Well, she "kind of" likes it better than some of the others. Very non-committal.
Do ANY of you know where I can get my hands on the pattern for the one above??
McCalls 9919 from 1938. One online vintage pattern company was
selling it for $125 and it sold.
I like this one too. But she didn't think she had the figure to pull it off... Really only Barbie could, according to the photo on the envelope!
But then again, another pattern they were selling for over $100 sold on ebay for $15. So it depends on who's looking at any given time.
If I need to draft the pattern, I will. It may add a little stress to the equation, but it would totally be a unique & special dress, don't you think?
Do you have any suggestions for a unique prom dress? or do you have the McCall's 9919 sitting in your sewing room collecting dust? I'll give you $20 for it!

Love them both - but the first is my fav!
Those are beautiful. But are you kidding? I have so many vintage patterns (some were my moms) that I could sell if they are going for that. Amazing.
I love all of the dresses. And, I will just say that maybe sewing a little padding in the upper part of the dress might help her pull off the vintage dress ;)
1938? WOW I didn't think they dressed that revealing back then ;o) I think she would look beautiful in both too. Though curious as to what you do with all the formal dresses you have made for her.
The back of the first one is just gorgeous!
