After the meeting, Meri, Leon & I went to a BUNCH of graduation parties with Maddy. Oh... my... yum... Such great ideas on how to display photos and awards and what delish food! Meri's idea for her grad party, in 5 years, is to have a HuHot grill on the deck and hire real Mongols to cook for everyone.
I'll keep my eye open for one of those round grills at the garage sales this summer...
The beautiful flowering trees started dropping their petals and it was snowing but in a great and glorious way with no chill temps! This was in the morning on Sunday and after church all the petals had already rotted and looked gross, so the timing was perfect!
By 8 or so, we were exhausted and tired of hugging kids I barely knew. Well, some I did, so THAT was ok... I was impressed by some of the gifts that other people give to graduating seniors and felt that mine fit the bill somewhat ok. Some of the gifts were a can of pop with a handmade personalized cozy on it in the school colors, or a bottle of Jones Cream soda with the class photo from fall on the label. Cool!
What I was giving out was a printed out, on distinguished resume, speech of Baz Luhrman's commencement speech that I'd posted about a couple weeks ago. I wrote a personal note for that graduate on it too. Then I'd gone through the bajillion pictures that I have since Maddy was in preschool or before that included any of her friends that were graduating. Sent them all down to Walmart, because they're only .09 cents a print and included photos of that kid in with the speech. Some of them were photos of sleepovers at our house, school trips, activities or 4H events that the parents of that Senior might never have seen. I really wish I could have found the Barbie Makeup Sleepover party pictures!! Monica's makeup was ridiculous but adorable! Some friends had tons more than others... naturally...
Sunday was the big day! Maddy and the other 5 in her treble sextet sang the Star Spangled Banner and I took a video from a terrible corner where you could only see Mad's nose on occasion... But I kept it together through the commencement speeches by the valedictorian, (altho I was a LITTLE weepy during that one), the president of the NHS speech and the president of the student council speech.
My camera ran out of space during the Senior song, so while I scrambled to delete some previous videos off my camera, the seniors sat back down. Then the principal announced that the Seniors would do their special walk around song. I didn't know what that was, so I was scrambling more to delete old videos as a song from the movie Matilda started playing...
I happened to look up and saw Maddy walking toward me with a rose in her hands and tears in her eyes. I lost it! We both blubbered, hugged and cried. We weren't alone... And I was able to snag a kleenex off the mom sitting next to me!
And suddenly she was a high school graduate!
Two down and one to go! WHHHAAAA!!!!!

I had tears in my eyes too when I read about her giving you a rose.....
I never know what to give graduates as a gift hence I always give the good old stand-by: money......
Congrats to you and to Maddie! She is wonderful.
And what a thoughtful gift! I have 2 graduation parties to go to this weekend, I might make something for one and give money for the other. SO I guess I would be half thoughtful.
Congrats to Maddie!
