The day started off as any other Saturday, errands... After a couple things got cancelled at the last minute, I came back with literally tons of pumpkins and after a lot of "I want to do this first", or "I want to sleep a little more", or "I want to eat lunch", they finally buckled down and got to work. I was NOT going to let the girls go back to college with no carved pumpkins on my porch!
Meri had a friend over that didn't want to touch the pulpy pumpkin pit, so she just observed. Probably a good thing, since I didn't plan on her when buying the pumpkins.
Meri based hers on Jack the Pumpkin King and it's pretty convincing! You can see it further down.

Leah needed to have a Dr. Who theme, so she scoured the internet for an idea and went with it. I do NOT have a picture of that one, because she wanted to take it back to the dorm with her... It was very cool.
Maddy went with a lantern theme from the movie Tangled and cut lots of rectangles all around. That is further down in a photo because she did NOT want to take it back to school with her. HAHA! I get it!
For Leon's pumpkin... He was kind of weird with the goopy guts, so I did most of that and I cut it out. I did shapes and the letter L just for him. He spent the rest of the time fitting the shapes back together. It's just a big toy for him and something to play with on the porch. We keep the pieces inside the thing.
Mid afternoon, the college girls crashed on the big butt chair and the couch. Leon wanted to play so he climbed up next to Maddy but she wouldn't wake up enough to entertain him. He climbed behind the chair and played peek a boo until he realized no one was playing with him. About 20 minutes...
Then went and read a book to himself. If he can't play with Madeline, he'll read the book about her instead.
Maddy had saved and cleaned up the pumpkin seeds so I found a recipe online and went with it. In the past whenever I've baked them, they usually end up burned or really chewy. These turned out pretty good, but I do have some mods I'd like to make to the next batch I make... Which I'm pretty sure I'll forget about by next year. Maddy and Leah took them all with them for their car ride back...
I sliced a pie pumpkin up and baked the slivers. Once they cooled, I cut off the peel and pureed the heck out of it. It WILL be a pie this year! My mother in law took one sliver as they were cooling, thinking it was a late lunch. She mashed it up, added butter and after a couple bites asked, "Just what kind of squash IS this??!" Um... it's for pumpkin pie... Not exactly Jacama, which is delicious!!
That evening Leon had to play on the dining room table after Super Secret Steak Night supper while we all sat and talked and played Bible Mad Gab. He had run back and forth on the table squealing with delight, especially since he can now reach the chandelier... Afterwards, he was still pretty excited to climb up by himself and just relax. We've had to un-train him since, because this needs to stop by the time he's 15...
Here are the final products of our efforts! There are two plain pumpkins that Leon will get to carve with his parents some time during the next week or so.
Scary, huh?
Sewing adventures of the day tomorrow!

I like that you let him play with the pieces like a puzzle. Good job!
No granddaughter for Halloween so my pumpkin is sitting on my front porch, uncarved......
The pumpkins turned out great. Ours still need to be carved!
I like the one with shapes.
Anna sleeps a ton when she comes home too. Must be a college thing-as in not sleeping enough.
And your pumpkins are adorable! We haven't done pumpkins in years. I think Den is the only one that misses it. LOL
