We made it to the State fair!!!!!
On Friday night, right at the stroke of 5, we were on the road to the fair. On the way, Maddy found that her cell phone wouldn't even turn on... With her headed off to college on Saturday, we figured we better stop in at the cell store to figure out what to do with it first. Turns out that you're not supposed to use a smart phone charger on a dumb phone... Who knew?!! We also wonder if the guy was just feeding us a line. He did a diagnostic test but all checked out good.
She doesn't get a smart phone yet after all...
We got to the fair grounds an hour later than we'd planned... FINALLY got the car parked and had Leon relieve himself between some cars before we got into the fair grounds. All was good until Maddy noticed he was whizzing on my shoe. REALLY??? sigh.
We got our traditional Chinese food at our favorite vendor and Leon got his footlong that he ate all of 3 bites on.
Sluggy asked if this face making is a genetic trait in my family. It must be... Or just our natural look.
After supper, we headed over to the Fabric & Threads building and saw all the fabulous garments and quilts. My sewing group had come away with literally tons of ribbons.
Ok figuratively, but it sounds better.
They are a creative and awesome bunch of women!
I found my dress. The fitted dress was hanging backwards on the hanger and the overdress was facing forward... REALLY??! Oh and no ribbon. I'm not surprised about that. I'm just wondering what the comments will say IF they even wrote anything. Doesn't matter. I'll just try not to sew in that much of a rush again without a few more fittings!
Then the rides!!!! Maddy, Leon and I grabbed some burlap sacks and headed to the top of the big slide. While at the top, we had an argument with Leon. Oh and Maddy suddenly decided that she is still, in fact, scared of heights. She had thought that all the mountain climbing she'd done over the summer had cured her but she supposes, just of non-man-made heights. The stuff God makes is ok to climb on top of, but anything man-made still freaks her out.
She almost went down the steps she came up on. Leon wanted her burlap. He was determined to go down this thing all on his own! I don't know what the rules are, but in my book, he's too little to.
So I made some rules up and he went down with me.
He had a blast and was ready to go again, but there were other things we wanted to do.
And Maddy was brave and did it anyway. She surprised even herself!
We headed to the agricultural building.
Leon treated the mist fountain like it was bidet. Got drenched...
Got our traditional apple slushies and got some brain freeze before walking past the butter cow.
And yes, this is the cow's backside... Isn't the detail amazing?
Butter... mmmmmmm... Leon would have eaten the whole thing if he could get behind the glass. He's a butter hound.
Then onto the rides! Leon, Meri and I went on this ferris wheel.
The views from as high as we were made me want to barf, but Leon loved every second of it.
Maddy stood at the bottom and just held her head in her hands until we safely got off the thing. She kept imagining the worst.
Then the girls and Leon went on the spinning dinosaurs. I thought they'd made a game of spinning it just so, so I wouldn't be able to get a good picture of them in it. So I went from side to side of the caged in area and made my attempts.
We left and Leon was ticked. You can't really see in this photo, but he's not relaxing against Maddy's shoulder. He was actually wailing that he wanted to go on more rides. Well, we'd had one ticket left and I was getting exhausted, so I gave the remaining ticket to a family with kids and gave the girls the high sign to leave. They obliged and Leon pitched the fit.
At least he didn't pee on us again!
He wasn't talking reasonably with us about the fair until the next day when he could tell us what he liked best. There was just no talking with him that night on the way home.
For us, the Iowa State Fair is over with.
I'll head back down to pick up my dress when it really is done.

No doubt Leon would have closed the place down! So much to do and see!
Now that's what i call a good time! Leon isn't afraid of anything is he? I remember standing in long line ups for rides when Kazi was little - by the time it was our turn she decided that maybe she didn't want to go on that ride after all. I'm wondering if your dress had been turned the right way you might have had a better chance at a ribbon!! Obviously the judges know nothing about haute couture!
