This last weekend, our community celebrated Scandinavian Days. If we ever get more Irishmen in our community, the St. Patrick's Day parade won't feel so lonely...
But as luck would have it, 99% of our area used to be Scandinavian, so we make a huge weekend of it! I'm just a fraction Scandihoovian, as my husband puts it with a bit of Norwegian, German, English, etc. I guess mostly German. Robb is mostly Irish. The kids are mongrels.
The local acting troupe puts on a musical every year and this year, they performed Suessical-the Musical. Boy - do we have some talent around here!
The elementary school kids perform Norwegian dances every year. We have to come up with the traditional costumes for our kids if they want to participate or if the parents want them to participate... sometimes the kids aren't agreeable. For girls, black skirts, white top and red vest. Boys, black shorts, white top, red vest. I improvised a bit with my concoction for Meri this year. She doesn't do well in skirts, so I made her a jumper.
We had a great time watching them dance. Maddy sang along in Norwegian with some of the songs that she recognized from her youth but refused to dance along.
The next morning was the parade. Maddy marched with the middle school and her drum. Louie Louie for the entire parade. She's sick of that song now! I hope high school has some fresh challenges for her musically so she grows to love band there too.
Her shoe became untied one block into the parade and she didn't get a chance to fix it at all. We met her at the end of the parade while Meri loaded up on all the leftover candy from the floats that just wanted to get rid of the rest.
Then we headed to Kansas City for the rest of the weekend... What a rush! Does life ever slow down?
