Lilacs!!
Lilac bushes grace the front of our house on both sides. They bloom about 2 weeks after every elses does and then the blooms only last about one week. I think someone told me that they were a Japanese variety and bloom later. I don't know...
They finally bloomed last weekend and are already starting to look wilty. But the fragrance! The Fragrance!!! is heavenly! Robb hates it and wishes I'd cut them down, except then people could see inside the house too easily from the street.
When you walk past them, the fragrance hangs in the air like a thick gorgeous mist. If you happen to hate the smell, then it's like a thick greasy stench... But I love it!
When I was a kid, we had lilac bushes in front of our house next to the gravel road & our propane tank. Behind them was a little spot that only me and my best friend could fit in. Dirt floor, perfect playhouse.
My grandmas house had lilacs next to her front door too. I remember sitting on her front step gazing past the lilacs to her shaggy lawn beyond. Every once in a while, I get a glimmer of that memory as if it were yesterday when I sit on the bench on our front porch and the kids have put off mowing and the grass is a bit longer than it should be.
I'll miss them when all the blooms fall away and will look forward to their beauty again next spring.
