I guess I'm on a theme this week...
Today's challenge for our designers.... Make a gown out of an old tablecloth and scraps!
Our lead designer Meri is having a bit of trouble with the side zipper, but figured out a draped look to cover the zipper up.
She was the model at church Sunday morning and heard several compliments on her craftiness and style!
I love our church family! The ladies there were so supportive and complimentary of her dress and really made her feel good about her project.
She had watched last weeks Project Runway on Saturday morning and came downstairs feeling like she could design anything. After lunch, she said, "Mom, where is that table cloth that you said I could use? I know what I want to make out of it!" And she did...
I showed her how to measure and mark up the dress makers dummy with black tape. She took over from there, asking for help every so often. Everything is handstitched. The safety pins were taken out and hand stitched at that spot with little roses covering the stitches. She didn't want to unpin it from the dummy to even stitch up the side seam and zipper, so all that is hand stitched too. There is a piece of black microsuede for the front so it's not so low cut anymore and the same black fabric for straps. She wore a sweater shawl with it.
She has promised me tho that her next project will be following a pattern and learning the techniques the right way first before designing her next red carpet design.
She'll be a couture designer before you know it! I should start checking into the tuition at F.I.T. in New York! A friend of mine in the American Sewers Guild has a daughter that just started there this fall. What an exciting field to be in!
Meri also wants to join ASG and attend all the meetings with me. She saw in the last newsletter that the youngest member is 13 and she wants to beat that! "I want to be the youngest member!"
Cool! I'll let her come with me again next Saturday and we'll sign her up!

Very nice ! Her tablecloth looks better than a lot of dresses I've seen in many stores.
I would never be able to do anything like that. My kids are scared when I have to use a safety pin on them! Tell her great job!
How cute is that dress. I can't even hem my daughters pants.
Wow, that is AMAZING! Great job! I can barely make a pillow. And that's straight lines!
You guys are so sweet! I'll pass these comments on to her.
Oh Wow!! She is so talented! When I was her age, I about drove my Home Ec teacher CRAZY because I could never, ever figure out which way to lay the fabric, which end was up, how to pin on the pattern...poor thing...by the time I had finished my SIXTH YEAR with her (2 yrs. Jr. High and 4 yrs. High School) she just couldn't take it anymore and retired! HA! LOL
Talented young lady you have on your hands!
How great is that?
I would have never thought of making a dress out of a tablecloth. Of course, I don't sew.
Happy SITS Day!
How cool! I went through the Molly Ringwold/Pretty in Pink stage when I was younger but it never really stuck :)
