For some reason this morning, I told this memory to Meri during breakfast. I don't remember what triggered it. It was probably the spinach on my omelette... who knows?
I'm older than Melanie by 4 years. She was just turning 7 or 8 and REALLY wanted a Dancerella doll for her birthday. That was THE toy that year. However I could never afford that. So I had purchased with my OWN money a hamster for her with a cage, wheel, the works! I knew she was going to love it! And every time she asked me what I was getting her, I tried to evade her questions. She pestered me and I wanted to keep it a secret. So finally she asked me directly, Did you get me a Dancerella doll? And out of frustration on being asked so many times, I finally answered Yes. Then she left me alone.
Problem solved and secret still intact. *whew*
Then came the next night... Her birthday dinner. She opened the presents everyone gave her and waited anxiously for mine. Since it could not be wrapped I had it in the garage and ran to get it. Herman the Hamster made a wonderful entrance and all were impressed except the birthday girl who promptly burst into tears and several sentences that were incoherent.
Curiously Dad disappeared. Mom tried to calm Melanie down but it was useless. She hated Herman. Hmm.. Guess he's mine! :)
About 20 minutes later Dad reappeared and said that he had found one more gift that he'd forgotten in the car. Wrapped in his standard wrapping paper of a Woolco bag, he presented his gift. She opened it up and started squealing. For a few days after I believed that the gift had been left in the car, but later found out that he'd ran to Woolco (or was it Shopko then?) and purchased it. It was just a few minutes drive away.
That was a birthday she never forgot.
So now when my husband hounds me about what I got him for Christmas or a birthday, I merely say a breastpump. Because I don't want to get his hopes up and besides... he doesn't really want one...

Hilarious. I tell mine he gets nothing!
HAHAHAHA! Breast Pump! Now that is a good one! :)
That's fantastic!! And so sweet of your dad to run out and get that toy.
Have an Extraordinary Day!
What a great dad story!
I love this story and love that you give the answer "breastpump" now.
We have Shopko where my mom lives. It was a huge deal when it came to town.
LOL! That's funny. I'm going to have to remember that the next time questions start flying about presents.
Oh, but what if he REALLY WANTS a breastpump???? lol
I remember Dancerella. I had a friend who had one of those!
My hubby does mean things to my presents. I'm a sneak who likes to shake the Christmas presents under the tree and try to guess what I'm getting (and I usually do...much to Hubby's frustration)...so one year, he wrapped my gift for Christmas, and in the box he put a tin of nuts and bolts, so when I shook it, it sounded like I BROKE WHATEVER it was! How mean is THAT???!!!
A breast pump?! That's hilarious!
It would be more funny if one day he tells you that he wants one ;o)
That was sweet of your dad to get the doll for your sister. Does she remember this story? And if she does, is it the same way you remember it? Now days to buy a hamster and the trappings for it would be the same cost as a doll!
This is a great story - I had a dancerella with blonde hair!
What a great Dad!

lol Funny story!
How sweet. The breast pump idea is a good one. Wish I had thought of it when my husband kept guessing his Christmas present.
I only do my shopping the day before, because I HATE shopping, so no one ever asks me, because they know I don't have it yet
Thank God it was not where I live, but unfortunately not many had the same luck. that's sad.

What a great big sister you were, to get her the hamster and all the stuff! I hope she liked the hamster too, eventually. I am the youngest of 10, and I remember trying to get one of my brothers to buy me a toy once...he resisted. Does your sister still have that doll?
Great post!

I don't remember Dancerella, but she looks totally awesome! Well worth some hounding.
Breast pump!!! AHHA!! Good idea. That's what I'm telling everyone from now on.
Great story! LOL Hope you have a great weekend!
Blessings,
Jill
I could definitely see my husband doing something like that for our daughter.
