On Tuesday night, Meri tested for her next Taekwondo belt. She currently has a red belt and the next will be a red/black, which is first degree black belt recommended, then she'll have 6 months to prepare for the actual black belt.
It was just our small club that participated since all three kids missed the big testing last month.
She did her form SOO nicely! The form is a sequence of 46 moves (for red belt) to show off what you've learned. It's pretty standard in this TKDo association. In my black belt level, it's 83 moves. Then she sparred. Before testing she'd been practicing a big series of jumps, spins and kicks to use during sparring and she didn't get it in at all... shoot. But she did well anyway. Then when board breaking came along in the evening, I got to be a board holder. She broke both boards on the first attempt!Meri is acting like she did terrible, but we know she didn't. I think she just doesn't want to get her hopes up... just.in.case.
We won't find out for a while yet. But I think I can ask the instructor quietly this next week and promise not to tell...

Holy mackerel! Go Meri!!
sure you won't tell me just like you did last time! ;p
Rock it Meri!
Go, Meri, go! Aaron's a first degree black belt in karate, working on second degree...which takes about 2 years of intense work with weapons, forms, competitions and sparring. But...it's amazing how similar the red belt graduation for TKO and karate seem... interesting...
