On Friday I got inspired to make a duffel bag for the county fair. I found some yardage denim in my stash and some flowery stuff also for accents. Got it completely done by Saturday afternoon.
The flowery bias tape stuff was all done with bias strips running through this little contraption which is a just a miracle tool, let me tell you... I'll have to do a tutorial on this sometime, but WOW! What a time saver! and the bias tape matches every single time! On Sunday after church, Maddy and I stopped by JoAnns so I could pick up some snappy things for a baby jumper that I'm making. If it turns out really well, then it will go to the county & state fair this year and then I'll send it to a nephew whose wife just had a baby recently. If it doesn't turn out exactly right, then I'll just send it to them now... ;) While there, we noticed that McCalls Patterns were having a 99 cent sale! Woohoo!!!!
As if we didn't have enough patterns and ideas at home already... But Maddy really wanted to look through them and if we could spent 99 cents on a prom dress pattern it was saving money!
You've got to spend money to save money...
So we picked out 8 patterns. For the patterns, we picked a couple different tops for Meri for school this fall and various different things for the rest of us.
It was in this moment that Maddy got inspired to sew! When we got home, she brought me some fabric from my stash and asked if she could make a pair of shorts with them. I said, "Today?? Okey Doke."
She cut it all out with my supervision and started going through each step. Sunday afternoon turned into Sunday evening. I sewed my baby jumper during the times that Maddy wasn't at the sewing machine and ironed it while she was sewing. Walked her through the steps she wasn't sure of.At the end of the day Monday, she had a very nice looking pair of shorts, but they weren't done quite yet. We did the waist over my lunch yesterday and then she tried them on again.
They just need a cuffed hem and a fastener at the waist and then they'll be done! It's a baby cord fabric. You can't see the details too well with this camera, but there are side jean style pockets and belt loops. The pattern said "easy" but wow, there were lots of details to make this more complicated that I thought it would be. She was very proud of how well she did on the zipper too.
And this was the girl who was perfectly content to let me do all the sewing for her in the past because she hated sewing.

Okay, seriously?? Maddy never sews and her first project is a pair of shorts??? With pockets??? And she can wear them???? They are adorable!!! It must run in the family, this sewing thing. Um...I have too many !!! and ??? in this comment.
It must be something in your DNA for sewing. She did a great job.
You have the cutest family!!!!
Have a great rest of the week!
Wow! You did a LOT of sewing this weekend. Way to go Maddy! If I had that kind of sewing success, I'd make a career out of it. ☺
Meri sounds just like me at her age. My mom taught me how to sew but I didn't like it. Mainly because it was so much easier for her to do it for me. Now, I am SO glad she taught me the things she did, especially when one of the sons need something repaired.
Wow. Great job, Meri. And great job, Mom, teaching her how to sew that well!
