The State Of Things

On Tuesday night, Meri stayed overnight at a friends house. On Wednesday morning, I sent my son to go pick her up and take her to piano lessons. From there she walked to the shop where Grandma works and stayed there for the rest of the morning. They went out to lunch and did some shopping, getting home around 4pm.

I went in to see her and she was sacked out on the couch, dead to the world... What kind of marathon shopping had they been doing?? I wondered...

I got off work at 5 and went to wake her up. She and I were going to go to the open house at the Varied Industries building at the State Fair grounds to check out our entries. She'd been planning on going for weeks. She was so tired and feeling icky that she cried, but insisted on going. I could barely get her to take an ibuprofen for her headache and helped change her into some cooler clothes. She was still insisting on going to the Fair though and I didn't really relish the thought of carrying her to the building because I knew it was going to be a hike!

Okey dokey... We got her a cool washcloth for her forehead and she and I headed off. It's an hour drive and she slept the whole way. As I pulled into the fair grounds area Meri woke up feeling so much better. In fact, she was perky! I wish I could wake up like that...

Got to the Varied Industries building right about 6:40pm. It was going to close at 7. Had a chance to look around at everything and find our entries as well as projects made by people of our ASG group.

Meri's dress got third place in her division of kid's entries under the age of 18! We're so proud of her! I can't wait to see what she comes up with next year!
She ran ahead and then came back, guiding me to my entry making sure my eyes were shut tight. I was pretty sure I was going to trip but I didn't.

The prom dress got 2nd place! TOO cool!
The duffle bag got an honorable mention and the baby jumper didn't place at all. But there were some pretty great childrens items I was competing with, so I'm not surprised. I'm looking forward to seeing the judges comments and seeing how I can improve for next year.Meri thinks I'll have the whole wedding party clothes entered next year. 3 bridesmaids gowns and the bride's gown. That whole special occasion area will be full! But since I have to rush it with these, they may not be State Fair quality. We'll see.

On the walk back to the car, we saw a Clydesdale horse. On the way over to see it, I told Meri that these horses are so huge, one of their hooves is larger than her head. She thought I was kidding... But they really really are!

This one is named Fire. None of the others were there yet. That would be great to see them in action outside of a beer commercial! Maybe we'll see them when we get a chance to come back.
Oh! Found out on the way home that the reason Meri was so exhausted was because she had stayed up until 1am and then got up at 6 to help her friend make her mom breakfast for her birthday! So she was running on 5 hours of sleep... I can't wait until school starts!

Anyway, that's the state of things so far. Anyone else at the fair this week?

I figured that she would get even more ill at the fair. You got lucky.
You and your girls are so talented! I'm so impressed but I knew that you would win.

Sleepovers = no sleep...or, that is how it is for my daughter. Glad she perked up!

If you got second place, I can't help but wonder what the dress in first looked like because your dress is totally awesome!

Dear McVal,

I'm sure you've heard it a thousand times before but that dress looks amazing. I found your blog after seeing your comment about the bodice technique on threadsmagazine.com and have been following ever since. I will hopefully soon be constructing my own version on the gown but instead of the bias strips only on the bodice they're going all the way to the knees following a mermaid silhouette where they'll poof out into a giant cloud :) I just wanted to say how much I appreciate your blog and the (miss)adventures of your family :)
