The family LOVE these! Dollup some butter on them.. yummmm....
The recipe was found in the 1979 edition of the Horn Of Plenty cookbook, compiled by the band parents of Sumner Iowa. This page, in particular, of this cookbook looks pretty worn and dripped on...
BRAN MUFFINS
1 1/2 cup Sugar
1/2 cup Crisco
1 cup boiling water
2 cups Kellogg's All-Bran
1 cup Bran Flakes
1 pint buttermilk (2 cups)
2 1/2 cups flour
2 1/2 teaspoons soda
2 eggs
1/2 cup Crisco
1 cup boiling water
2 cups Kellogg's All-Bran
1 cup Bran Flakes
1 pint buttermilk (2 cups)
2 1/2 cups flour
2 1/2 teaspoons soda
2 eggs
Use a LARGE mixing bowl. In a smaller bowl measure the All-Bran. Pour boiling water over it and let it cool. In another large bowl measure sugar, Crisco and cream together. Add eggs and beat them. Add buttermilk, soaked bran, Bran flakes and sift dry ingredients (flour and soda).
Mix all together and store in container in refrigerator.
Will keep 5-6 weeks. Just dip out batter (do not need to stir).
Two different ways to cook them...
1) Bake at 350 degrees for 25 minutes.
or
2) Spray a large mug with Pam type spray, fill half way with the batter. Then microwave on high for 1.5 minutes. (depending on the power of your microwave). It should billow over the top for a little while. Then plop it out onto a plate, slice and eat with butter and a fork. Can you tell option #2 is our favorite way to eat them?
We made this at Christmas-time and Tiffany kept hearing about us eating them each morning, but she didn't know how we made them. AND she didn't realize what that big container in the fridge was. So Robb made them again this week and we're almost out of batter again.
I wonder if she got to try them at all this time...

That's a neat recipe. We'd probably not finish a big batch, but being able to bake them one at a time would be great. I'll have to put cereal on my grocery list.
Looks yummy! I love old recipe books! I collect them :-)
I say your tag yesterday...I will try to get mine posted soon! LOL
Have a great weekend!

That sounds good!
Think you can substitute the Crisco out for 1/4 cup butter & 1/4 cup applesauce? I may give it a whirl.
