I'm sharing a recipe. Not sure if the the girls were just really REALLY thirsty and would have drank cold kerosene... but they drank all of mine up and said it was good. So... here you go.
I found a recipe online for cream soda to make our own pop, "soda" if you don't live in Iowa or are a transplant... Or live South of I80... I used our Soda Stream to make the carbonated water.
It is a Martha Stewart recipe, but does have less than 45 steps and with a few cheap tweaks is totally doable! Click here for the original recipe. HERE
Cream Soda Syrup
2 cups cane sugar
juice of 1 lemon - I Googled it so use 3 Tbsp lemon juice instead
1 vanilla bean, split and seeded - I also Googled this so use 1 tsp vanilla extract
Ice cubes
Carbonated water
Directions
1. Place sugar and 1/4 cup water in a medium sized nonreactive saucepan. I have no clue what nonreactive meant, but my sauce pans are coated with a black something or other, so I used that... Heat over medium-high heat until sugar is caramelized. I couldn't get it to caramelize brownish, so when it changed texture twice and felt super gritty on the bottom, I took that as being caramelized.
2) Stir in 2 cups water and lemon juice; add vanilla bean and seed (or just the vanilla extract) and bring to a boil. Remove from heat and let stand for 1 hour.
3) If you used the vanilla bean, strain. Transfer syrup to an air tight container. Syrup may be kept, refrigerated, for up to 2 weeks.
4) To serve, fill a 16 ounce glass with ice cubes and add 1.5 ounces syrup (I'm using about 1/4 cup). Top with carbonated water and stir.
I made the first glass and had my girls be guinea pigs and handed them straws to try it out.
They drank the whole thing...
Now granted, they might have been dehydrated and really REALLY thirsty, but I made another glass for myself and it WAS really good!
Hopefully I'll get a chance this week to try this out using Splenda, but I think I can skip the caramelizing step as the Splenda will dissolve immediately anyway!
The only negative feedback I got from the girls was that there was no color. Cream soda normally has a slightly brownish color, right? No wonder the pop companies add artificial colors!!! I might have to see what food colorings I've got...

Kat hates it when I say sody-pop, but I figure I'm covering all bases that way. ;)
Ethan's favorite is cream soda. I won't be making homemade though. ;)
"cold kerosene"-HAHAHA, I really laughed at that one!
Cream soda here is red. However the 'all natural' ones are your color so tell them that: It's all natural ;o)
I have to admit that I don't like cream soda!! BUT, I do admire you making your own. Much better than store bought stuff full of chemicals!
