Based On A Dare...

A lot of things were first done on a dare.  Jumping from an airplane...  A boy sticking his tongue on a frozen flag pole...  My dad asking my mom on a first date...  Haggis...

Some were total flops, but some were great successes!  You can probably guess which were which here...  Maybe not...

But today I'm talking about Irish food.  On the day after St. Patrick's day, we had our annual Irish feast.  Due to extra visiting family on our end, we decided to host it at our house rather than taking the food out to my friends, where the tradition originated.  Ordinarily, the weather is nicer and it's not a big deal.... But my friend is in a wheelchair and very skittish about any precipitation.  So they had to cancel...  bummer!  We were getting a good deal of snow that day, so we decided to continue on with the meal at our house.

Here is what was served...

Irish Butter - the best butter in the world!!!  It's quite expensive, so keep it near your plate and pass around the normal American butter to everyone else.

Scotch Eggs - hard boiled eggs, wrapped in sausage and then deep fat fried.  A total breakfast package!!!  but served with the meal...

Colcannon - real mashed potatoes with heavy whipping cream, cooked cabbage, cream cheese, butter.  And used in many other dishes besides just Colcannon!

Corned beef and cabbage - duh.

Leeks in cream sauce - a mild onion with loads of heaving whipping cream with some country mustard and other things.  This is really good!  I got a pic of the leeks soaking before they were actually made into the dish.

Our version of Dingle pies (aka corned beef pockets) - fillo dough wrapped around a concoction of corned beef, colcannon and a couple other things to make a sauce.  These turned out better than I expected!  Even after we burned the outer layer of fillo dough.  I just flaked the outer layer off and brushed them with some butter.  They looked much better.

Cod Cobbler - cod baked in a sauce covered with little balls of colcannon and baked.  It looked beautiful with the little professional looking balls of potato.  I used a small Pampered Chef cookie scoop.

Onion pie - here is where a dare must have happened...  And the person doing the daring, must have been drunk.  I'm not a big onion person and ate a small piece, but onion fans raved...

Dublin Coddle - sausage, bacon, potato and carrot stew cooked in apple cider.  A favorite around here.  I could eat this every night!

Brown bread - a good stand by to soak up any stray sauces on your plate.  Note the American butter behind the bread...  That's for everyone else!

Blackberry crumble - dessert!  I made this and to be quite honest, it was turned out really good!  The photo??  not so much...

Sorry for the poor quality photos!  I didn't have my camera handy and just used my cell phone camera just before the meal started.

Then after the grand meal, I spend many many minutes washing dishes by hand.  The dish washer guy comes tomorrow.  WOOHOO!!!  My chapped dry hands will be thrilled!

The next morning before headed out of town for a day trip, we took a bunch of the food out to our friends and they enjoyed some Irish food for a few days.  *there was a LOT of food...*

We dared them to eat it all in one meal.

I love this post. Maybe one day you'll share all of the recipes with us. We were at the NEW Trader Joe's in the big city yesterday and I saw Irish butter for the first time. Seriously. I should have bought it.

Would never try the cod pie, I don't like fish.
But for the onion pie, my aunt would make us onion sandwiches all the time growing up and I loved them! In fact, I was talking about her recently and her famous onion sandwiches; white bread soaked in bacon grease, a thick slice of onion, salt and pepper. Haven't had one in years. After reading what it is, think I'll wait a few more years.....

Every bit of this meal sounds delicious to me!

I have some Kerrygold butter in the fridge. I am trying -- really trying -- to love it and think it is special, since I know it is healthier than most other butter because it's from grass-fed cows. But it's not working. It's good butter, but I personally don't like the flavor better than American butter. I guess I had read too many good things about it and was expecting more than it could deliver. :(

I do like their cheeses, though. :)

All the food sounds delicious! I wonder if I would like onion pie. I *do* like onions, but a whole pie of them would be a lot.
