We've got a digger... For the past several days, Reedus has been getting out of the yard for the brief amounts of time we allow him back there. Robb and Ryan fixed the gate a week or so ago that he and Duke tore apart and I strapped some tie out cable around a broken wrung of our deck. But Houdini dog keeps getting out. So a couple days ago, I walked the yard looking for suspicious areas. Oh I found em...
There is a reason he comes back into the house covered in mud every single time! There were holes all along the back fence. I covered up the bigger ones with some wooden poles we have and bricks, but vowed to come back to it this weekend with a shovel and other things to discourage him from digging. Oh and I found a couple deep holes right smack in the MIDDLE of the yard!
The mower is going to fall in...
If I ever get around to mowing...
If it ever dries out enough...
So anyway, yesterday over lunch, I thought I'd try Reedus out there again for 5 minutes. I went back to get them and only Duke and Ellie came back in. I spent most of my lunch hour looking for him and then gave up. Went back to prepare my lunch and ate on the deck watching for him. I was about to go post something on Facebook to ask neighbors to watch out for a golden running loose. That's about when a transformer blew a few blocks away and the power went out in all of my town.
I don't have a smart phone.
So I couldn't even go back to work! I spent another 15 minutes driving around town looking for him, then went back to the house. Got a laptop and cord and decided I'd spend the afternoon at McDonald's using their wifi and power. As I left town, I stopped for gas and that's when I heard two dogs doing a noon day barking. One on the left and one on the right about a block away from me. I drove down and almost turned to check out the dog barking on the right when on the left I noticed that Reedus was tied up in the back end of a parked city truck barking his head off!
There was NO one around, and trust me I called out! I went up to the abandoned looking house and rang the doorbell when the city guy came around the house next door.
Um... You found my dog!! Thank you???
Apparently Reedus had been nosing around the business district of our small burg and they called in the big guns. I found out the procedures in case this happens again and took the digging maniac home.
Stayed at McDs for 2 hours when I realized the cord I grabbed was the wrong one and the laptop was not charging. Either that or that power outlet was not turned on... I think it was the cord.
So I went to Robb's office a few miles away and worked from his desk for the rest of the afternoon. He was out of town until last night and the receptionist let me. I had to hack the password and realized that he and I overlap on some of our passwords! Whew!
Found out when the power came back on 3 hours later (from a neighbor) that Reedus, while on his gallivant, had been harassing someone out on a walk and got them all muddy.
And the walker was NOT happy about it...
Imagine that! I'm kind of glad the neighbor didn't know who the walker was! So that means they probably don't know who I am!
Found a tie out chain and a collar for him, because he eats them off... and last night put him out on the chain until I can get the fence fixed.
Went out to get him in the dark after they were only out for ten minutes. The chain was hooked around the back stoop so I had to free it and then jumped clear of it in case Reedus would try to trip me up. He wouldn't come... I even tugged on the chain and it wouldn't budge.
It was pitch black out there... I found where Reedus was stuck half in/half out under the fence... So I ran back inside to get Meri and a flash light. We ran around the outside of the fence and he'd already made it all the way through and was standing in my garden with his collar and chain still on, triumphant in his escape.
ARGGHHH.....
This morning BEFORE I put the dogs out, I filled up the freshly dug hole with some materials and a heavy brick. Then sprinkled red pepper flakes all around that side of the yard next to the fence and into any holes he'd dug on that side of ye ol dog poop hill. I heard pepper flakes can be a good deterent!
Poor Ryan when he finds out that most of the pepper flakes are gone! Oh well, this is more important!
Well, it worked so far this morning...
I'm just waiting for the moment that Reedus discovers he likes spicy food...

Well you did go and name him after an independent rebel! You can't keep Reedus fenced in!
Poor you! I'm just imagining all that DIRT coming into the house :(
Me thinks you need a new fence.
Put that on the list of things to do....lol
Mercy, lady. That dog wants out! I hope you can keep him corralled. That was a close call!
is he fixed? Just thinking Spring weather and all that!!! There could be a female dog in heat somewhere.
I think you are going to have to tie him up when you let him out.
Oh my goodness, he's determined isn't he! Our dogs love to dig too and our little one is a contortionist and slides right under the fence! We had to pour concrete in some areas and nail a few boards in too. Glad he wasn't lost for good. Best wishes resolving it... can be tricky.
Blessings,
Jill
