Girls day out!

I hope everyone has a safe and Happy New Years Eve tonight! We're going to play board games and hang out as a family until midnight when hubby will play Auld Lang Syne in the driveway on his bagpipes, then off to sleep! We used to get away with watching the ball drop on tv in New Zealand but the kids eventually caught on and knew that it wasn't REALLY the New Year in our time zone... So now we stay up...

Anyway - I took Monday and Tuesday off from work and on Monday I took the girls to Des Moines for a Girls Day Out. We had a fabulous time! We stopped at one mall first and the girls used up a couple gift cards they got for Christmas, then we went for lunch at the HuHot. Maddy wasn't too happy that Meri & I went up for seconds... but oh well. We texted her from the huge line around the grill to taunt her. After a "quick to me" stop at JoAnn Fabrics, we made it to the Science Center just in time to watch Polar Express on the Imax screen. Because we were later than most everyone else, we had to sit towards the front with our heads bent all the way back over the chair watching it. I almost lost my lunch on the crazy roller coaster part...It was just barely light out still when the movie let out, so we stopped at Starbucks so Maddy could use up some of her gift card from a thoughtful aunt, then we went and waited for Jolly Holiday Lights to start at Waterworks park.Gorgeous lights! But being Christmas, shouldn't Christ be in there somewhere? He wasn't... The only half way religious display were a few angels.

The money goes to the Make A Wish foundation, so it's for a very good cause. Here are a few of the pics that the girls took during the drive thru. Maddy experimented with my new cameras settings and took lots of various shots of things. Standing in the middle of the road for a few shots before other cars caught up to us. She's determined to get at least one photo to the 4H state fair this year!Someone was smart and filled up a limo of people ahead of us. At $9 per car, they definitely got their moneys worth! We had a good time!
We headed home just in time for late supper with Robb. Too bad the kids go back to school next week already!

Have a great New Year!

Laughed at your "quick to me" trip to JoAnn's. There's no such thing as a quick trip there. I've been wanting to go. I'm thinking about making some curtains for the living room.

That is so awesome about your hubby playing the bagpipes! You guys would make really cool neighbors! Wanna move to FL?! ;)

Happy New Year!

You are so smart! What a great idea to watch the ball drop in a different time zone!! Wish I had thought of that!
And someone in our neighborhood plays to bag pipes but not at midnight!

I so love the pictures. I also enjoyed your descriptions. The lights are beautiful.

The only time I get to go to JoAnn's is about once a year. Hubby always promises that he'll let me browse, but that lasts for maybe five minutes before he gets tired. Ungh!

Christmas break went by way too fast! Polar Express on I-MAX huh - I'd be ready to toss some cookies, too. Even on the small screen there are so many twists and turns :D
