But since every last morsel of food I eat gets stuck in my craw (I’ve always wondered what that was… NOW I know from first hand experience!) I decided to go and set up an appointment and went on Monday. Bit the bullet, as it were.. Or x-ray bit as it was in this case.
The kids are getting sick of me using the little floss sticks in front of them. Apparently I gross them out! Who knew?! Not that now knowing stops me…
After breathing through my nose for 10 minutes while spit and plaque flakes pile up in my mouth, the dental hygienist asks me about my kids. Gesturing wildly for the spit sucker, I clear my mouth and tell her what she wants to know. Accidentally swallowing once. ONCE. Now I have plaque build up in my stomach… and she’s asking WAY too many questions about my sons job at Hot Topic...
Apparently for someone who likes to put things off.. for like 15 years… the plaque hadn’t built up all that much. She complimented me and made me feel smug. My mom would be proud. Except for the two fillings that need to be replaced, there was only one other minor issue and that will get fixed next time. Teeth and gums look good. Will be back for two more appointments in the next two weeks with more gruesome stories to tell…
Whew! I was pleasantly surprised that they didn’t suggest false teeth this early in the game…

Do you chew a lot of sugarless gum? Shane had put of going to the dentist for years and years, but he chews a lot of gum and the dentist told him it had really made a difference in his teeth staying fairly healthy because it pulls out a lot of food particles after eating. This is a good thing, since he can't floss (even the dental staff have a hard time flossing his teeth).
A trip to the dentist is probably the most favorite of people. About you saying you will never go to the dentist, I always tell my kids never say you are never going to do something because you have a lot of life to live yet and you may do it.Thank you for coming by.
Sometimes I think it is all a racket just to get you to do something more often. We all go to the dentist every 6 months and for the most part we don't have problems. I do think that brushing and flossing is the key. We missed 2 years and when we went back, I got a bit of a lecture and nothing was wrong with anyone's teeth. Hmmmm, makes you wonder.
I spent monday at both the dentist AND periodontist - fun stuff :D
that donkey's kinda freaky! craig just went to the dentist today, and kate goes tomorrow.
Man, I HATE going to the dentist. They always tell me I'm doing a great job brushing and flossing, but inevitably they think I need a filling or two EVERY time! (I'm suspicious this is simply a filling raquet and I actually don't NEED fillings. To make the point I have canceled and rescheduled my appointment to get said fillings 3 times now, with the last time simply saying "I'll call back another time to reschedule." ....that was 2 months ago! ha!) For me dentist = panic attack, and that's not fun.
[taking in a deep, calming breath and exhaling slowly to the count of 10 . . .]
Just make sure you don't have any boogers when you go...
Going to the dentist for a check up is on my list of summer things I need to do. I'm in need of a cap and have been putting it off for several years. I hope to put it off for another 6 months.
Good luck! I'm always amazed when I go to our dentist. The staff goes to such pains (no pun intended) to keep us comfy and relaxed. And then *what* do they show on the little tv monitor in front of your face? Horrid, wretched dental photos (before and after). It just makes me sick to my stomach. Next time, I may be brave and ask them to please turn it off :) I'm really not that touchy about things, but those photos are gross! :p
Love the picture for this post! -Tammy
