On Friday night, Meri did a school project. She drove over an hour away with a friend to attend the only and last drive in theater in the state.
It's HOMEWORK!!! Honest!!! Apparently they'd been talking about it in their history class and the teacher said they'd get extra credit if they bring back a receipt from this theater. OK... So Meri got a permission note from her dad that said she could stay out past midnight, but because she was getting tired, they only stayed for the first show. Her 3rd or 4th time seeing Zootopia.
Robb couldn't stomach it even the first time.
One of the many times she just HAD to go see it with a friend, I started to suspect that it was turning into Meri's personal Savannah Smiles movie... But she can seriously quote that bunny movie backwards and forwards so I don't doubt her anymore.
If you're wondering about the Savannah Smiles reference, did you ever see this movie?
Me neither.
Whenever I wanted to see a movie that I knew my parents wouldn't approve of, I told them that my sister and I were going to see this one. It was rated G and looked pretty harmless in the newspaper ad so no questions asked, except, "So... you really LIKE this movie, huh?"
I think that was the summer I became a huge Bladerunner fan and also saw Conan the Barbarian. If you have the choice between the Conan movie and Savannah Smiles. Pick Savannah. I'm just sayin'...
I've told my kids about this subterfuge and one of them actually gave me the dvd of Savannah Smiles for Christmas! It's still wrapped in cellophane... SOMEDAY I'll watch it!
Now that Tom Barnaby has retired and I can't stand the new guy on the Midsomer Murders tv show, I might actually have some free movie time on my hands! I got to season 14... that's enough.
BUT back to Meri. She borrowed our car since her truck had gotten a new battery on Thursday and the battery light STILL hadn't gone out. She has the last remaining good car in the family besides mine... Ryan has our older car. The other car is leaking transmission fluid like a sieve and the Vue is sitting patiently until Teen Challenge comes around to collect it. It's dead and good. So Robb and I are shuffling cars. Good thing I work from home and only really need it on days when the grandboy goes to preschool or I have a lunch date...
Robb's brother will be here this week and they'll replace the alternator on the truck. For the time being, Meri's putting the new battery on a charger every night just in case.
So back to the car sitch. The car Maddy is driving will probably not be safe to drive to Colorado this summer and I'm NOT giving her my van. I can be mean... So Robb has been doing some research into buying a new car that we'll have her use and he'll take the Taurus back where we can keep an eye on it. It's been having some issues as well.
So on Saturday we drove two hours, enduring Leon getting carsick from eating too many donuts and apple juice while concentrating on his Pokemon card collection folder. He filled up Robb's drink cup and my empty cappuccino cup. yay. It was all I could do to keep from enjoying sympathetic vomiting. I held his hand until he fell asleep and then he slept the last hour until we arrived at the dealership.
Robb had found two used cars here that piqued his interest. Upon arriving, we found that one of them had too many problems and we might as well keep the one we had. The other was getting a new computer installed but otherwise seemed VERY sound. Robb selected that one.
Ironically, it's a Vibe...
Perfect. A Vibe for our little Vibe-ster!
We'll call it Vibey McVibe-Face.
Apparently that's a VERY popular way to name things these days!
Too bad, we're done naming our children... It gives me an idea.
While we were car shopping, I was the BAD grandparent and let Leon climb all over the cars in the dealership office.
I suppose in hopes that it would hurry things along... It did take us almost two hours of our day.
Leon showed the salesmen his dance moves, hugged our salesman, spilled some pop, ran laps around the cars, discovered how to yank open the car doors, slam car doors, turn on the Sirius radios, got to sit in a $90,000 Camaro and push it's buttons. Also a $70,000 double cab pick up. His favorite...
I told him no, we weren't getting that one. So after unsuccessfully begging me, ran up to Grandpa, slid on his knees about 3 feet while holding his hands in a prayer motion and begging "PLEEEEEEEASE?!!!" He will SO get into Show Choir with that move if our high school offered it. I did NOT get a photo of that and it was so adorable, "I" almost caved and bought it for him, but did capture a photo of him hugging his choice.
We finally settled him down with a movie on Robb's phone and their wi-fi. That lasted just a little while, because there are only so many times you can watch E.T. For Leon, it's once. Then he was back to running the office. When I say running, I mean it. It's all fun and games until you smack your face on the floor.
Yeah... we need to leave.
The MUCH cheaper car won't be ready to pick up until later this week, so we're still doing the auto shuffle for now. Meri has been a trooper about giving Robb rides to work on days when I need the car.
Looking forward to visiting the drive in sometime.
I think Savannah Smiles is showing.

My mama loved that movie. It makes me cry or it did then. I haven't seen it in so long. I looked it up and can't believe I had been married two years when it first came out! There is one drive-in left in our state, too. We keep saying we're going to go. Maybe this summer will be the summer! I think car dealers should just have to deal with crazy kids when they keep adults in that place for HOURS to do something that should take minutes.
I choose Blade runner! That's the show when I fell in love with Rutger Hauer! Vomit in a cup? Leon has some pretty impressive skills!
I throw up when others start. It's more like a party trick. Yuck.
And buy the boy a truck. What is wrong with Grandparents these days?
My gosh, the stories you have on that little guy! I picture him laid out on the windshield if someone else tried to buy it. I remember knowing about the Savannah Smiles but not quite the story. Was she kidnapped? Uncaring parents, both? Something along those lines right? All cutesy movies back then had uncaring parents and kidnappers. Benji?
We have a drive-in theater right here in my backwoods community! No kidding! Still in operation after all these years. My parents went there as kids. It drives me crazy to try and watch a movie there.
I remember hearing about that movie... I may have watched it but I can't remember, lol.
Blessings,
Jill
